Abstract

Esta tesis analiza la natalidad en España a principios del S.XXI. Incluye tres capítulos empíricos sobre el impacto de los factores culturales sobre la natalidad, el impacto de los factores estructurales y culturales sobre el número ideal de hijos, y el impacto de las condiciones de vivienda sobre la natalidad a partir de la crisis económica. Los principales hallazgos son: (1) que las diferencias entre la natalidad de las mujeres nativas y las inmigrantes se deban a diferencias en las actitudes o valores depende de la región de nacimiento; (2) el efecto de los valores y actitudes asociados a la Segunda Transición Demográfica depende del lugar de nacimiento; (3) el número ideal de hijos está condicionado por factores culturales y estructurales; (4) el régimen de tenencia, el acceso a las hipotecas, la calidad y el tipo de vivienda han influido significativamente en la natalidad desde que estalló la crisis económica.
This thesis examines fertility in Spain during the first years of the 21st Century. It contains three empirical chapters: one examining the impact of cultural factors on fertility outcomes, one examining the impact of structural and cultural factors on fertility ideals, and one examining the impact of housing conditions and other material aspects on fertility in the wake of the economic crisis. Broadly, our main findings are: (1) whether ideational factors account for differences in the fertility outcomes of native Spanish women and women born abroad depends on the region of birth; (2) the ideational factors emphasized in the Second Demographic Transition framework affect fertility depending on the respondent’s birthplace; (3) both cultural and structural factors shape fertility ideals; (4) beyond the standard material conditions, housing tenure status, access to mortgages, housing quality, and the type of dwelling significantly impacted fertility since the beginning of the economic crisis.
