This thesis, a compendium of publications, aims at contributing knowledge to better design
CSCL tools for promoting socioemotional interactions and regulation. We started with a field
study in which we observed groups of students collaborating in a context outside school. We
designed a functional prototype for an asynchronous communication tool that integrated
features to facilitate socio-emotional interactions and regulation during the whole process of
collaboration. The most valued feature by students was the possibility to send anonymous
messages to the collaborative chat. We found that anonymity increases social interactions
but also unproductive messages. To optimize the increase in social interactions (while
decreasing the amount of trolling messages) we tested different types of anonymity. Our
results show that anonymity to peers but not to the teacher is the most productive one. We
also offer a taxonomy of off-task messages because many of them contribute to a good
atmosphere in the group.

Esta tesis, un compendio de publicaciones, tiene como objetivo aportar conocimiento para
diseñar mejores herramientas CSCL para promover las interacciones y la regulación
socioemocional. Comenzamos con un estudio de campo observando grupos de estudiantes
colaborando fuera de la escuela. Diseñamos una herramienta de comunicación asincrónica
con características para facilitar las interacciones socioemocionales y la regulación durante
la colaboración. La funcionalidad más valorada por los estudiantes fue la posibilidad de
enviar mensajes anónimos al chat. Descubrimos que el anonimato aumenta las
interacciones sociales pero también los mensajes improductivos. Para optimizar el aumento
de las interacciones sociales (y al mismo tiempo disminuir los mensajes de trolling)
probamos diferentes tipos de anonimato. Nuestros resultados muestran que el anonimato
ante los compañeros, pero no ante el profesor, es el más productivo. También ofrecemos
una taxonomía de mensajes fuera de la tarea porque muchos de ellos contribuyen a un
buen ambiente en el grupo.
