Dealing with banknotes is part of our life. These little pieces of paper travel from hand to hand. We are not aware that we are touching an object which has been in contact with a large number of people. Its surface holds an unimaginable amount of organisms, which are invisible to the naked eye but existing and alive... Based on that interest, this research project has been developed: a microbiological study of banknotes from different monetary systems. The aim of the experimental research is to find out whether banknotes are a possible source of contagion and if the country of the banknotes conditions their microflora. In order to solve these questions, banknotes from foreign countries have been collected, samples have been frozen, in order to maintain the maximum microbial life, and sown using different microbiological techniques. Once the bacterial cultures have been done, the colonies have been analyzed and observed, apart from having biochemical tests and differential stainings done. The combination of these processes has made it possible to obtain information about the fungal and bacterial genera present in the samples, and through calculations, to estimate the amount of microorganisms on a banknote. Based on these results, it has been possible to demonstrate that banknotes contain microorganisms with pathogenic potential. Due to the changes that this project has undergone as a result of the pandemic, it has not been possible to study the geographical aspects in depth.
