Estudio comparativo de tres diccionarios franceses: Dictionnaire de l’Académie Française, Le Littré y Le Grand Dictionnaire Universel du XIXe siècle

Abstract

Los diccionarios siempre han servido para adquirir nuevos conocimientos, pero también han sido armas de doble filo, un reflejo de la cultura y de la sociedad de la época de su creación. Ha quedado el rastro del autor en ellos, creando un gran impacto en la sociedad, tanto a nivel individual como colectivo. En este trabajo se presenta este impacto mediante la comparación de tres diccionarios franceses de gran importancia nacional: el Dictionnaire de l’Académie Française, el Grand Dictionnaire Universel du XIX siècle, de Pierre Larousse y, por último, el diccionario Le Littré, de Émile Littré. Además, se podrán ver las características formales más generales, así como detalles que no parecen tan obvios y que hacen de cada uno de ellos una obra de repercusión en la historia de Francia del siglo XIX. Nos serviremos de aspectos ideológicos, sociales, financieros, lingüísticos y religiosos para justificar el contenido de la información presentada en el trabajo. Asimismo, se ofrecen argumentos que tienen por objetivo transportar al lector a la época de la publicación, además de ejemplos que servirán de apoyo en la explicación. Se espera que el lector no entienda el título del trabajo como una comparación únicamente, sino, también, como una forma de entender el valor de los diccionarios en aquella época y el fuerte impacto que han tenido en la historia.

Dictionaries have always served to acquire new knowledge, but they have also been a double-edged sword, a reflection of the culture and society of the time of its creation. In them has been marked an imprint of the author, creating a great social impact, both individually and at a collective level. This paper will present this impact through the comparison of three French dictionaries of great national importance: the Dictionnaire de l’Académie Française, the Grand Dictionnaire Universel du XIXe siècle by Pierre Larousse and, finally, the Le Littré dictionary, with Émile Littré as author. We will also see the more general formal characteristics, as well as not so obvious details that make each dictionary a work with an impact on French history of the nineteenth century. Ideological, social, financial, linguistic and religious aspects will be used to justify the content of the information presented in the work. In addition, arguments are offered that are intended to transport the reader to the time of publication, as well as examples that will support the explanation. It is expected that the reader does not understand the title of the work as a comparison only, but also as a way to understand the value of dictionaries at that time and the strong impact they have had on history.
