The world of news is changing rapidly with the appearance of free urban press and, above all, with the gradual generalisation of the Internet as a means of access to the information. In this situation, scientific journalism faces serious difficulties in preventingits content from becoming banal due to the lack of contextualisation and an increasingtrivialization of newsworthy facts, which are becoming a mere consumer product. Thebig publishing groups have trouble facing this sea of changes in the traditional diffusionof news by the press, radio and television. The Internet makes it possible to by-pass conventionaljournalism, which tends to become a content supplier, while the public becomes a mere consumer and must develop its own discernment and critical skills in orderto access to a high-quality and independent information.

This paper presents a discussion of the social functions of scientific knowledge andits forms of socialization in contemporary society. Scientific knowledge has alwaysbeen important for the structuring of societies, but it has progressively gained prominencein recent years. Drawing out Systemic Functional Linguistics in association withphilosophical and discursive perspectives of scientific popularization, scientific knowledgeand its representations are here inevitably related to political and economical interests, socialcontexts and institutional and cultural circumstances. It is argued that science and its forms of appropriation and sharing are far from being socially neutral, influencingand being influenced by the relations established among the various groups of actors involvedin different ways in the structure of society. Scientific papers and news aboutscience are two different genres which construe different ways for knowledge circulationin society, articulating different representations of the social actors involved in theprocess of knowledge production and popularization.

This paper proves the value of discourse analysis to contribute to the research of thepublic communication of science. After contrasting the different ways of approachingresearch on language, from the point of view of its structure and its use, the linguistic use in context is established as the object of discourse analysis, just as the need to enlargethe perspective from different disciplines, that is essential in order to supply thestudy of communication units in social life with categories and methods. Consideringthe contextualization as the basic principle for linking the world of science and theworld of daily life, several specific topics are commented to illustrate the crucial needto apply discourse studies to oral and written communication of sciences: the reformulationprocess in various texts and interactions on the same topic; the participants rolepaying special attention to the construction of the popularisation position, and citationas a procedure to integrate different voices in the same text. The immediate communicationtypical in oral exchanges is stressed as a way to investigate discursive proceduresinvolved in the dynamics of interactive processes, and also to discover the importanceof an interactive view of communication.

Les tècniques de relacions públiques «ben fetes» poden facilitar el treballdels periodistes en el complex context del periodisme científic.; The pharmaceutical companies, laboratories, investigation centers, publishing houses, hospital foundations, authors, experts and researchers, universities and technologicalcenters must carry out with professionalism techniques and methods of the relationshipwith the media. If they seek to arrive to the public opinion, if they seek todiffuse knowledge beyond their internal frontiers, they should work through the expertprofessionals who can provide them their knowledge, experience and agenda-setting. It is not enough publicizing a discovery or an investigation in a worthy format, calling to thejournalists and waiting for them. It is necessary to create an interest among the communicationprofessionals so that information is understood as «opportune» and «unpublished».And science is not an exception. Journalists have much science material that they cantransform into a piece of news. The problems to do a good scientific journalism are evident.«Well made» techniques of public relations can facilitate the journalists workin the complex context of scientific journalism.
